Biography
When people embark on medicinal career paths, they usually know they are comfortable with the sight of blood.
Giorgio Armani was not as fortunate.
He did not discover his discomfort until he already had two years of medical school at the University of Bologna in Italy under his belt.
It did not discourage him though and he pursued other interests. While living in Milan, he was hired as a window dresser and later buyer for the city's largest department store La Rinescente. Not long after, he was hired as an assistant designer for the men's clothing company Hitman. He stayed with the company for six years before he determined he needed to become more independent. The Armani line was coming closer to becoming a reality.
However, he still had to gain more experience so in 1975, he worked with partner Sergio Galeotti and founded his own men's ready-to-wear line. A feminine version followed exactly one year later.
Hollywood helped make Armani a household name when actors like Richard Gere started wearing Armani's fashions in films released in the early 1980s. That celebrity trend still carries on today with multi-million dollar contract earners like Robert De Niro, Russell Crowe, Jodie Foster and Michelle Pfeiffer wearing Armani creations at Hollywood affairs.
By 1981, Armani had launched his Emporio Armani and Armani Jeans. The year after he released the famed Armani perfume for women. In 1984, a men's fragrance hit store shelves. For many years to follow, new Armani lines were introduced so that Armani's multi-billion dollar fashion empire includes swimwear, underwear and accessories, for both men and women.
Described by some as a fashion revolutionary, Armani changed fashion when he altered the definition of a man's power suit and how women dressed. Those who wear Armani say they love the fact it's luxurious and elegant yet comfortable at the same time.
Today, Armani has more than 2,000 stores worldwide. He travels the world but spends the majority of his time at the company's head office in Milan.
