Gillian Anderson did not always want to be an actress.
In fact, some might even be inclined to say she had bigger aspirations in mind when she was a child and looking to become a future marine biologist or archeologist.
It was a school play she auditioned for in Grand Rapids, Michigan that changed her whole outlook on life. From that moment on, she wanted to act.
So when she graduated from high school in 1986, she went to study at DePaul University's Goodman Theatre in Chicago. She completed her bachelor's degree in fine arts and then made the big move to New York where she was hoping to make her dream a reality.
Like so many others before her, Anderson had to struggle before getting a break. She found her first one with the off Broadway play Absent Friends in 1990. Critics liked her performance so much they gave her a Theatre World Award in 1991. Anderson followed this up with another play, The Philanthropist, and then left New York for Los Angeles in search of film opportunities.
Again she faced some hardship with unemployment now becoming a reality. It did not last long though as she was cast in the movie The Turning. Unfortunately box office sales were far from impressive so Anderson reevaluated her career path again and turned her sights on television.
She found her niche.
She auditioned for the role of Special Agent Dana Scully who would star on the new FOX network series the X-Files. It was during the shootings she also fell in love with Clyde Kotz who she met on set and decided to marry in 1994. The two had a daughter shortly after and a short time after that, divorced.
Anderson won many awards for her role including the Screen Actors Guild Award Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series in 1996.
The series completed its ninth and final season in 2002.
These days Anderson is busy promoting several charitable causes including Meanwhile, Gillian is doing her best to promote awareness for charitable causes including Neurofibromatosis, a disease which her brother has.
