Although Gigi Leung is well known for her singing abilities, she did not always have the breath control she has now.
As a child, Leung had frequent asthma attacks that worried her mother so much she decided to change her name to Wing Kei to bring her better health. Whether her fans believe in superstition or not, the change did her some good as Leung went on to excel in school and win the hearts of pop music and movie fans throughout her native country of Hong Kong.
Leung's tall stature and natural charisma was first noticed when she attended Hong Kong Polytechnic University to study design. At that time, she accepted a modeling assignment and caught the attention of film director Lee Chi-Ngai who cast her in her first film appearance in 1995. Later that year she appeared in a supporting role in the film Full Throttle. Despite the fact she was still attending school at the time of filming, she still managed to receive a Best Newcomer nomination at the 1995 Hong Kong Film Awards.
Her singing career began the following year with the album Love Myself. Since then she has expanded her musical repertoire to include writing songs for both herself and other local singers. Warner Music Hong Kong has a contract with her and has helped her produce more than 12 albums in both Cantonese and Mandarin.
When Leung isn't singing or acting, she is working as a spokesperson for a Japanese cosmetics company and an ambassador to UNICEF and the World Wide Fund for Nature Hong Kong.
Romantically, she was linked with Hong Kong singer and actor Ekin Cheng but the two were reported to have gone their separate ways in 2006. These days, she is said to have a boyfriend from France but to date, no one has been able to confirm who that is or if it is accurate.
