Biography
The traditional Catholic family who always had a lot of children certainly described Gerry Adams home life as a child.
He was one of 10 children who had parents from strong republican backgrounds and even stronger republican roots.
According to early reports, Adam's grandfather was a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood during the Irish War of Independence.
His father joined the IRA at the age of 16 and he participated in an IRA ambush on a Royal Ulster Constabulary that got him shot, arrested and sentenced to eight years in prison.
Michael Hannaway, Adam's maternal great-grandfather, was a member of the Fenians during their explosive campaign in England before the 20th century.
Despite his family's violent history, Adams himself tries to be seen as a peace maker. He was considered to be, for example, an important figure in the Northern Ireland peace process during the late 1980s.
Many say he also played a pivotal role in getting the Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA) to give up its war against the UK in return for devolved government for Northern Ireland.
Adam's political career began in full force in the late 1960s when the Republican spokesman supported an active civil rights campaign developed in Northern Ireland. The movement reportedly did not ignite any needed change in the war-torn region and Loyalist demonstrators showed their rebellion with counter protests.
The two groups caused major rioting by the end of the decade and British troops were called in to help bring order. This marked the beginning of the PIRA.
Adams is a spokesman for the Irish republican movement, otherwise known as the provisional movement which encompasses Provisional Sinn Fin and the paramilitary Provisional Irish Republican Army (Provisional IRA). PIRA is considered to be an illegal paramilitary organization. Repeatedly Adams has told the world he has never been a member of PIRA but there is much controversy surrounding his claims.
On March 8, 2007 it was reported that Adams was re-elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly.
