Biography
Anyone who follows the Grand Prix racing circuit at least has some idea who Gerhard Berger is.
The retired racing car driver, who now owns 50 per cent of the Formula One team Scuderia Toro Rosso, began his career competing in Formula One races. For 14 seasons, Berger stayed ahead on their track with two third place finishes being among his best rankings.
On the Grand Prix circuit, he was a star as well having achieved stats like 12 poles and 21 fastest laps. And in the Benetton arena, he was a two-time overall winner.
He is considered to be one of the most experienced drivers of all time having started in more than 200 races.
It was 1984 when Berger moved up to Formula One racing and 1986 when he joined the Benetton BMW team. All eyes were on the winner of the Mexican Grand Prix but it was Ferrarri's team who managed to steal him in 1987, a year when he won the final two rounds of the season.
The following year was not as successful for Berger and his team as the Prost and Senna team became the clear favorites.
His racing situation worsened in 1989 when Berger ended up in a fiery crash during the San Marino Grand Prix. Spectators were amazed though that Berger managed to suffer few injuries and was back in the driver's seat by mid season for a winning finish during the Portuguese Grand Prix.
Berger left Ferrari for awhile but returned to the team in 1993 when he scored a win for Ferrari at Hockenheim, the first win for the company since 1990. By 1996, Berger moved back to Bennetton.
In 2003, Berger made the move from sitting behind the steering wheel to standing in the pit lands working as Competitions Director for BMW.
In February 2006, Berger purchased half of Scuderia Toro Rosso's assets in a business deal.
