Biography
If the song Rags to Riches was about any person in particular, it might have been written for French actor Gerard Depardieu.
As a child, Depardieu understood the meaning of poverty having dropped out of school at age 12 and living off profits of criminal activity.
No one knew then that Depardieu may grow up to be an individual others aspire to be like. His juvenile delinquent activities were the most prominent part of his makeup and if it were not for a friend who encouraged him to try out acting, his future may have been very different from what it turned out to be.
Depardieu enrolled at the Theatre National Populaire where he studied acting laboriously. By 1965, his efforts paid off and Depardieu made his debut into the acting world with a French short film called Le Beatnik et le Minet and began making regular appearances on television shows.
Film acting caught on for the young man who went on to star in 11 more French films during the 1960s and 1970s. The 1974 film Going Places, however, was the one that entrenched him in the world of fame. This stepping stone led him to working with acclaimed French actress Isabelle Adjani and then director Bertrand Blier once more for the Oscar-winning Get Out Your Handkerchiefs in 1978.
In the years to follow, Depardieu was considered unstoppable in his quest to make box office hits like the 1990 version of Cyrano de Bergerac and Green Card which co-starred American favorite Andie MacDowell.
Other American films that won the father and accomplished winemaker critical praise included Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet, the 1997 film She's So Lovely and Randall Wallace's unforgettable, The Man in the Iron Mask where Depardieu played opposite Gabriel Byrne, Jeremy Irons, Leonardo DiCaprio and John Malkovich.
Like his unkempt character in The Man in the Iron Mask, Depardieu became known for his dangerous lifestyle. But after a heart attack and emergency bypass surgery in 2000, he made it publicly known he was cutting back on his alcohol consumption. This announcement followed a plane crash and motorcycle accident where it was reported that high alcohol levels could be seen in the actor's bloodstream.
In 2005, Depardieu announced he was going to retire from acting.
