Biography
Some stars really do catch a lucky break when seen on the streets.
In Gerard Butler's case, his acting career was the direct result of being approached in a London coffee shop by actor Steven Berkoff who offered him a role in the play Coriolanus. This was enticing to Butler and he decided to abandon law school at Glasgow University for the field of theatre.
He was later cast as Ewan McGregor's character Renton in the 1996 stage adaptation of Trainspotting.
Film came later for the Scotsman who made his film debut as Billy Connolly's younger brother in the 1997 movie Mrs. Brown. While filming the movie in Scotland, he was said to be enjoying a picnic with his mother when the two of them heard shouts of a young boy who had been swimming with a friend and got into trouble. Butler quickly jumped in to save the young boy from drowning. The Royal Humane Society recognized his heroics and awarded him with a Certificate of Bravery. His daring maneuver might have helped with being picked for roles in action-type films like the James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies which also came out that same year and Russell Mulcahy's Tale of the Mummy the year after.
Two years later Butler was making his presence known in the USA blockbusters like Attila. The film's producers, at that time, wanted a known actor but kept coming back to Butler whose screen tests were so remarkable they could not help but think he was their man.
At almost the same time Attila was being made, casting was in progress for Wes Craven's take on the Dracula legacy. Again, Butler was not readily accepted as the star attraction for these cynical producers but they too found they could not resist his unending tenacity. They eventually cast him and Dracula 2000 went on to become a huge success. Butler secured a solid fan base from both movies as well.
Since these films, Butler has appeared in the Reign of Fire, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life and Timeline.
He has also kept himself busy with musicals like Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera, Dear Frankie, The Game of Their Lives and Beowulf & Grendel.
