Biography
Politicians can sometimes fight on the field as well as on the political front.
George Weah proved that when he became a Liberian politician following his long and colorful soccer, or football as they say in Europe and other countries, career.
Weah started his career in his native country Liberia where he represented four national clubs (Young Survivors, Bongrange Company, Mighty Barolle Monrovia and Invincible Eleven) before moving to Tonnerre Yaound in Cameroon.
In 1988, he won the Cameroonian Championship and later moved to Europe where he was signed by manager Arsene Wenger who had the team that won the 1991 French Cup.
Weah was not long with them though before he was moving again. In the years 1992 to 1995, he played with Paris Saint Germain. By 1995, his career was so exceptional; he was named Europena Footballer of the Year, African Footballer of the Year and FIFA's World Player of the Year.
By 1999, he moved to many different European cities and finally ended up in Al Jazira FC in the United Arab Emirates.
An Ex-Muslim and now Christian follower, Weah, a devoted humanitarian who only embraced Christianity after following Islam for 10 years, talks to groups about the importance of religious groups living in peace.
By 2004, Weah announced his intention to run for political office and by October, 2005, he was running in the Liberian presidential election under the banner of Congress for Democratic Change. Although he won the most votes of any candidate in the first ballot, he was unsuccessful with the majority vote and spectators believed it was because of his lack of experience. Opponents also berated him with arguments that he was easy to manipulate.
He is married to Clar Weah, an American of Jamaican descent, and is the father of three children: George Jr., Martha, and Timothy George. He also has an adopted daughter named Jessica.
