Biography
George W. Bush is the 43rd President of the United States. He was re-elected November 2, 2004 and sworn in for a second term January 20, 2005. He was a Texan governor for six years prior to his presidency. At this time he reportedly earned a reputation for being a compassionate conservative who formulated public policy based on certain principles he valued like strong families and limited government.
Bush was born in New Haven, Connecticut and grew up in Midland and Houston Texas. Following his high school graduation, he was accepted into Yale University where he received a bachelor's degree in history.
Later he went on to become an F-102 fighter pilot in the Texas Air National Guard. Bush also educated himself at Harvard where he received a Masters in Business Administration.
His desire to become president probably became clear when he joined his father's presidential campaign in 1988. It wasn't long after this that he was elected Governor of Texas where he served two four-year terms.
Since becoming the President of the United States in 2001, Bush has commanded a great deal of positive and controversial attention.
His legislation the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 has been called a highly comprehensive education reform.
And his initial response to the terrorist attack in New York on September 11, 2001 was applauded at first, especially considering it only happened after eight months into his presidency. But since then, some have questioned his further decisions on the country's foreign policies, namely the wars the US is involved apart of in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Despite his no-nonsense approach to dealing with terrorists, President Bush took a different approach to the politics going on in Israel with the Palestinians. He told the US they need to take a "hands-off" approach in this instance due to the constant rising violence and the alleged failure of the Clinton Administration to negotiate.
Bush is married to Laura Welch Bush and they have twin daughters, Barbara and Jenna.
