Biography
He may have been the ultimate bubblegum pop star of the 1980s but his music ever since then has been anything but superficial.
George Michael, born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, has been described by many music reviewers as introspective, meaningful-minded and a creative lyricist who always tries to put his millions of fans first.
Since the making of his Wham! Albums like Fantastic, Make It Big and The Final, Michael has gone on to produce award-winning solo albums that started with his 1986 break from Wham! Partner Andrew Ridgeley., done ceremoniously at a concert in his hometown of London, England.
That same year he teamed up with Aretha Franklin for I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me) and in 1987, won his first Grammy in the Best Rhythm & Blues Vocal Performance category.
Michael's first solo album Faith was received with enormous anticipation and sold 16 million units worldwide. At the 1988 Grammy awards, Michael received a trophy for Album of the Year. The MTV Video Music Awards and other institutions also honored him for this career milestone album.
Media attention was starting to pick up steam for Michael at this point and like so many other superstars, he considered it a major hassle especially when his personal life was looking bad on camera at times. Self-induced dramas and one in particular caught the attention of hungry reporters who made sure the world knew about him being arrested for lewd behavior in a public restroom.
His second album then, Listen Without Prejudice, Vol. 1, reflected on his evolution as an artist, his personal experiences, both bad and good, and represented what some called a new raw sound for Michael and the new decade.
Six years past before Michael was able to release his third album. The media frenzy never slowed down during this time though and neither did his celebrity appearances. He joined forces with Queen and Lisa Stansfield for an AIDS benefit CD in honor of Queen's lead singer Freddie Mercury and even did the Grammy-nominated duo Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me with Elton John.
