Biography
Look no further when searching for the fifth Beatle.
George Martin, Sir George Martin in some circles, hears the reference a lot and figures it's because of all his work as producer of almost every single Beatle album.
Born January 3, 1926 in Highbury, London, Martin, even as a young child, was already on his way to making music history.
At the age of six, Martin's family acquired a piano that sparked his interest in music. However, it wasn't until two years later that he actually was able to convince his parents to send him to piano lessons.
Despite this early introduction, Martin wasn't quite ready to embrace music as his full-time profession and went on to study at various schools and following graduation, work as a quantity surveyor, a war office clerk grade, a pilot and even a commissioned officer.
It wasn't until 1947, when he reached the age of 21, that Martin decided to attend the Guildhall School of Music
Following his graduation, he worked for the BBC's classical music department followed by his term at EMI in 1950 when he worked as an assistant to Oscar Preuss, the head of EMI's Parlophone Records.
By the time Preuss was ready to retire, Martin was ready to take over for him and he spent his first years with the record label recording classical and Baroque music as well as original cast recordings of hit plays.
He didn't start working with The Beatles until 1962 when they had been turned down by Decca Records and most of the major British labels. Although Martin also didn't take a liking to them at first, he must have trusted his gut instinct and signed them, hesitantly, to a recording contract.
He knew they needed work though and provided not only production expertise but his ability to play keyboards himself. Penny Lane is one of the songs that clearly shows this marriage of talents with Paul McCartney mastering a piccolo trumpet solo through Martin's teachings.
Aside from his work with The Beatles, Martin also produced numerous recordings for other artists including the band America, country singer Kenny Rogers and Andy Leek who was originally with Dexy's Midnight Runners. Millions around the world also know him as a renowned composer.
In 2006, Martin and his son, Giles Martin, remixed 90 minutes of Beatle music for the stage performance of Love, a joint venture between Cirque du Soleil and The Beatle's recording company Apple Corps. Ltd. A soundtrack album from the show was also released in 2006.
