Biography
Kiss him and he might show you his tongue.
Gene Simmons, the rock star of legendary band KISS, is producing a whole new generation of fans with his hit A&E television series Family Jewels. Another reality show, Family Jewels chronicles Simmons and his family in their everyday affairs. His son, wife and daughter often catch him off guard in the series, showing that Simmons has a comedic character as well as a flair for the eccentric.
Long before this show ever aired, Simmons was tearing up the stage with his trademark fire breathing and blood-splitting lead singing style in the hard rock band KISS.
More than 30 years ago, Simmons and his three struggling young musician friends practiced relentlessly in a proverbial musicians' rundown loft before putting their group KISS out there with a live New York stage performance. Their style of hard rock, kabuki stage make up and unforgettable high energy performances brought on a bombardment of media attention that helped land them a deal with Madison Avenue executive Bill Aucoin who knew talent when he saw it and wanted to manage their band. Soon after he signed on, the group landed their first record deal with the fledgling Casablanca Records & Filmworks.
In 1974, the first KISS album debuted and KISS went on to sell more than 80 million albums and play more than 2,000 shows to millions of loyal fans, known as the KISS Army, right around the globe throughout their career.
Since KISS didn't drop wearing their distinctive make up until 1983, it was several years before Simmons appeared in front of the cameras again, this time without the demon make up, as an evil techno-junkie killer in the thriller Runaway in 1984. Simmons has since continued to turn up in low key roles in B-grade thrillers such as Wanted: Dead or Alive (1987) and Red Surf (1990) that utilize his ability to glower and look menacingly into the camera. In addition, Simmons has appeared in, over the years, minor guest roles in several television crime shows including Miami Vice, Millenium and Third Watch.
