Biography
Gavin Rossdale is his own institute.
Which is maybe why he decided to form the band Institute of which he plays guitar and sings lead. Prior to this gig was Rossdale's British rock band Bush, a highly success grunge band that topped US charts despite a lot of criticism.
Rossdale credits music with giving his some motivation in life and even a little stability - something that he lacked in his childhood.
At the age of 11, Rossdale understood the meaning of divorce when his mother and father split and he went to live with his father. Together with one of his aunts, Rossdale's father raised him along with his younger sister Soraya and older sister Lorraine.
Growing up, Rossdale wasn't clear on what his course in life should be and tried a number of different jobs including modeling for a short time. According to Rossdale, that whole experience could only be described as embarrassing so he soon looked for another vocation which led him to bass guitar.
Almost out of high school and Rossdale set his sights on forming a band called Midnight which didn't do much for releasing singles but had the publicity angle down tight and managed to release numerous photos.
By 1991, Rossdale decided to follow the Los Angeles dream and moved to the city to undertake any part time job while he waited for fame and fortune. The better life wasn't happening quickly enough and Rossdale, ever impatient, went to New York for awhile before returning to his hometown of England where he was inspired to start a new band. He joined forces with Scottie Mac, who later was to be his future manager, and went through a couple of bands before deciding on the band Bush. Their first album, Sixteen Stone, was considered a huge commercial success even if some critics chose to call it a rip-off copy of bands such as Nirvana. Almost overnight, Rossdale's band went from playing the small pubs in London to headlining arenas in the US.
By 2002, Rossdale and his Bush band broke up and two years later, he had Institute in play.
Rossdale is married to rock star Gwen Stefani, has homes in Primrose Hill, London and California, had a baby with Gwen in 2006 and is said to be a regular on the celebrity tennis circuit.
