Biography
Gary Valenciano, who was named after the actor Gary Cooper, is a celebrity for more than just his singing, music arranging and dancing abilities.
He is frequently used as a role model among doctors in his native country the Philippines.
Since his youth, Valenciano, following in his mother's footsteps, has been diabetic. But he has never allowed the disease to slow him down and as a result, is labeled with the distinction of showing exemplary behavior when it comes to managing the condition.
Ironically, Valenciano is actually known in some circles as Mr. Pure Energy. His stage performance, something he has been perfecting since he first appeared on the Pilita and Jackie Show in 1982, is considered to be a dynamic display of pop music and pizzazz.
Valenciano has recorded more than 21 albums of which four are gold, five are double platinum and three are even triple platinum.
He has appeared in numerous television commercials, acting as the spokesperson for products such as Coca-Cola, Bioderm, Alaska Milk and Max's Fried Chicken. UNICEF even pulled him in during their 1991 Fill the World with Love campaign and their iodized salt campaign six years later. Valenciano was so enamored with the experience; he became UNICEF's National Ambassador of Goodwill for the Philippines in December, 1998.
Although his acting career is not as widely known, Valenciano managed to star in 12 films produced in his native country. In the US, he became famous for his role in the 1984 film Hotshots where Jobelle Salvador played his love interest.
He has also performed in musical theatre and been involved in several television live shows as well as sitcoms.
He is married to his manager Mara Anna Elizabeth Evangelista, with whom he has three children: Juan Paolo Martn, Jos Angelo Gabriel, and Kristina Mara Mikaela.
