Biography
Although a family man now with three children and wife of more than 25 years, you wouldn't have guessed that about Gary Sinise in his teenage years.
Uninterested in school and a rebel without a cause, Sinise was toying with trouble in his youth, playing in bands and ignoring good advice from his teachers who couldn't get him interested in school.
Living in that rebellious image, Sinise and his pals tried out for West Side Story, mostly as a lark. Little did he know acting for him would be come a way of life.
It didn't take long for Sinise to leave behind his Blue Island and Highland Park, Illinois roots for the city of Chicago where he founded his Steppenwolf Theatre Company in 1974.
The church basement is where they performed to start. But soon word got out and their stature was growing.
Fuelled by their popularity, Sinise took on more ambitious roles like directing some of the company's most notable productions including Sam Shepard's True West which gave them the much sought-after off Broadway status.
Giving direction suited Sinise who started his Hollywood career in the same fashion. In 1986, he directed two episodes of what has become to be known as the stylish TV series Crime Story followed two years later by the feature Miles from Home which starred Richard Gere.
In 1992, Sinise was in his first feature film, the World War II fable A Midnight Clear, as an actor. That year was a career milestone for Sinise who combined his acting and directing talents to produce the critically acclaimed Of Mice and Men.
However, it wasn't until 1994 when Sinise started building his mega fan base with the blockbuster miniseries The Stand followed by the never-to-be forgotten film Forrest Gump. In Gump, Sinise's portrayal of the disabled, emotionally tortured veteran earned him several awards and an Oscar nomination. Capitalizing on this success, Sinise stayed busy the following year and paired up with Tom Hanks once more for Apollo 13 and then starred in the HBO television film Truman which earned him the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards and an Emmy nomination. These days fans can spot him on the hit TV series CSI:NY.
Sinise is married to Moira Harris and their three children are Sophie, McCanna, and Ella.
