Biography
When Gary Lineker strikes you, you better pay attention.
At least that's what his former soccer, or football to European fans, teammates would tell you about their Striker who is known worldwide for having scored 10 goals in two World Cup competitions for England's national team.
They credit him for his inherent sense of positioning and intelligent understanding of the game that made him such a prolific player.
The Queen Mother of Football started his career in his hometown of Leicester in 1976. Two years later, he had already made the city's first team squad.
By 1985, Lineker's fame was spreading as he scored 38 goals in 52 games with Everton. Barcelona was watching and signed him just prior to 1986. He did not disappoint them and had winning stats all the way to 1988 when he helped the team win the Copa del Rey and the UEFA Winners' Cup in 1989. Lineker's winning streak did not last when the coach at that time, Johan Cruijff decided to change his position on the field.
Lineker or Links did not let them slow him down though and returned to England to play three seasons at Tottenham Hotspur, scoring 67 goals in 105 games and winning the FA Cup before ending his career.
Lineker retired from soccer with 80 caps and 48 goals and the reputation of never having been placed on the bench.
He went on to develop a media career, initially on BBC Radio 5 Live and as a soccer/football pundit before replacing Des Lynam as the BBC's anchorman for football coverage, including their football television program Match of the Day.
Following the departure of Steve Rider from the BBC, Lineker, who loves to play golf on a recreational basis, became the new presenter for the BBC's golf coverage.
His popularity has also enabled him to appear in a light-hearted series of commercials for Walkers crackers, playing a comical role as an arch-villain which pokes fun at his reputation as being a nice guy.
In 2003, Lineker was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame.
He recently divorced his wife Michelle, following 21 years of marriage. They have four sons together.
