Biography
A toothy grin and unsettling glint in his eyes may be part of actor Gary Busey's charm but it certainly isn't his only attribute.
The Goose Creek, Texan who was born to a Native American father and Irish mother and raised in Oklahoma, was a full-fledged professional musician before he graduated from college in 1963 and began his career in acting.
In fact, some may remember his drumming career where he played with numerous different bands including those of country and western legends Leon Russell, Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson.
Although talented in this area, Gary couldn't resist fulfilling his acting aspirations and talks about how much he loved making his first film, a low-budget rebellious story about bikers who mean business, Angels Hard as They Come which came out in 1971.'
From here Busey transformed himself, many times over, into a country hick, redneck or surly soul.
It wasn't until 1978 that he started being taken seriously as a commanding role on film and got cast as the dynamic Buddy Holly in the 1978 movie The Buddy Holly Story. Busey wasn't satisfied to just act in this film and took on playing his own guitar as well as singing all the vocals.
Critics couldn't help but notice and awarded him with a Best Actor Academy Award nomination.
Agents started clamoring for Busey's attention and the roles started rolling in.
He was next seen in films with other up and coming actors like William Katt and Jan-Michael Vincent where he portrayed a surfer, among other characters.
This wasn't his career highlight though and it wasn't until 1987 when LA cop actors Danny Glover and Mel Gibson came along with the movie Lethal Weapon that Hollywood started taking Busey seriously again for his rough and ready assassin appeal.
Other credits Busey can add to his list include the 1990 horror Predator 2 which also starred Danny Glover, the smash hit Point Break, starring Busey as a bad-ass cop tracking bank robbers and the smash hit movie Under Siege which put Busey alongside of film icon Tommy Lee Jones.
He attributes his rehabilitation from drug addiction to getting reacquainted with his Christian roots.
