Biography
Millions of people still remember him as the always-loyal office manager Radar or Radar O'Reilly on the hit television series M*A*S*H that ran for 11 years from 1972 to 1983 and then re-aired for many years to follow.
But Radar did a lot of other things following the highly successful show.
His acting career was a music career, both before and after the medical black comedy when he worked as a drummer for the jazz trio The We Three, a name that almost seemed to reflect his short stature that was always good for comic relief from fellow M*A*S*H actors such as Alan Alda.
The ability to perform as a musician was surprising to some as Burghoff was born with only three fingers on his left hand which is also slightly smaller than his right. He has never allowed the disability to slow him down but was careful to hide it during his seasons on M*A*S*H and usually had it behind a clip board.
Burghoff left M*A*S*H shortly after the start of its eighth season. He told his fans he wanted to spend more time with his family. However, he also admitted to being burned out.
It was not long however before Burghoff was fully working again. Soon after his departure, he created his own All-Star Dixieland Jazz Band which recorded one album and toured many of the jazz clubs in the US. Burghoff also went back to his theatre roots and toured five regional theatres with the show The Owl and the PussyCat.
Television wasn't the only venue for the twice-married award-winning actor, director and songwriter. On film, he had roles in a few movies that included M*A*S*H the movie and The Man in the Santa Claus Suit which starred Fred Astaire.
By the time the movie The Nerd came around in 1987, Burghoff decided to take some more time off. He took up painting and shortly thereafter started doing it professionally. Many of his wildlife pieces could be seen throughout American art galleries. Burghoff has since donated several pieces of art to various wildlife preservation societies.
Burghoff has two children and is presently married to Elisabeth Bostrom.
