Biography
Gael Garcia Bernal is truly the ultimate child star.
Having started acting supposedly at the age of one, Bernal already had his career path laid out for him. Probably not such a bad thing considering his parents were both in the business working as actors and his father, a director as well.
During his teen years, Bernal was working in soap operas and finding his way into young girls' hearts.
He did not just act as a child though and spent time teaching literacy to the indigenous people of Mexico.
By the age of 19, he left behind Mexican television and his hunky heartthrob status to pursue the study of acting at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. He became the first person from Mexico to ever be accepted into the program.
He returned to his homeland after completing the program and starred in a number of different films including Amores Perros in 2000 and EI crimen del Padre Amaro in 2002. Bernal has graced theatre as well and did a 2005 production of Bodas de Sangre by Federico Garcia Lorca in the Almeida Theatre in London.
His television credits include his portrayal of an Argentine-born physician turned Cuban revolutionary in the 2002 television miniseries Fidel and his role, two years later, in The Motorcycle Diaries, an adaptation of a journal written by a 23-year-old Guevara who traveled across South America.
Bernal has worked for acclaimed directors like Pedro Almodvar, Walter Salles, Alfonso Cuarn, Alejandro Gonzlez Irritu and Michel Gondry, among others. He has recently taken on roles in English language films, including The Science of Sleep, the Alejandro Gonzlez Irritu-directed Babel, and The King.
He has been nominated for a BAFTA in 2005 for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for The Motorcycle Diaries and, in 2006, was nominated for the Orange Rising Star Award.
Romantically, he has been linked with the likes of Natalie Portman who he met at the Oscars in 2003. The two went their separate ways after that but were caught on camera back together in 2006.
