Biography
Being a super star athlete doesn't mean you can't also be picked for magazine covers.
Gabrielle Reece has been balancing the two lifestyles for quite some time now with a number of high profile magazine shoots under her belt and, of course, triumphant volleyball trophies on her mantle piece.
Born in 1970 in La Jolia California, Reece spent her early development years living on St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. By the age of seven, it was clear sports might be her forte as her height at that time had already reached five feet.
Height and her exposure to the beach were the perfect mix for her volleyball career that really began when she relocated to St. Petersburg Florida for her high school days.
After attending Florida State University in 1987 and majoring in Communications, Reece went on to compete in volleyball as a Lady Seminole for three years. At this time, she set season records for solo and total blocks and earned several all-tournament honors for her superior ability. In her junior year, she was named Most Inspiring Collegiate Athlete in the country and actually was inducted into Florida's Athletic Hall of Fame.
At the young age of 19, Reece began modeling. She started with New York's Ford Agency and quickly became selected for Elle Magazine's five most beautiful women in the world. Magazine covers that followed included Harper's Bazaar, LIFE and Women's Sports & Business. Never did all of this deter her though from her love of volleyball.
Sports endorsements were soon to follow these modeling achievements and by 1993, Reece became Nike's first-ever female spokesperson for cross-training. That same year, she saw herself competing in the Bud Light Pro Beach Volleyball Leagure where she lead in blocks and out mastered her teammates. She became captain of Team Nike in the year to follow and was named the league's Offensive Player of the Year for two consecutive seasons.
Reece has a number of other credits listed against her name including being an MTV sports host from 1993 to 1996. In 1995, she could test her risk-taking skills with her involvement in The Extremists. There she got to try drag racing, white-water kayaking and skydiving, fulfilling the belief there was nothing she couldn't accomplish.
