Biography
Gabriel Byrne is truly a legend among actors.
The classically-trained multi-award winning thespian has been declared by some critics as one of the finest actors of our time.
He also holds the distinction of being an Academy Award nominated producer and acclaimed stage actor.
Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, Byrne began acting with the Abbey Theatre and later joined the Royal Court Theatre in London to perfect his skills.
American fans began to recognize him when he worked the raved-about feature Miller's Crossing. Not long after this film hit theatres, Byrne was busy again with a new movie, this time a lighter piece. Into the West, a film Byrne produced and starred in opposite Ellen Barkin, was his next winning attraction followed by the feature In the Name of the Father which earned many Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture of the Year.
As his career picked up pace, Byrne starred in yet another Academy Award nominee film The Usual Suspects. His co-stars were other big name attractions and included the always appealing Kevin Spacey and Benicio Del Toro. Later that year, Byrne starred in the independent films Smilla's Sense of Snow, The End of Violence and Plish Wedding with Lena Olin and Claire Danes.
Never one to give up on stage acting, Byrne has kept this part of his career active as well. His passion for the art has been recognized in this arena more than once and included a Tony Award for Byrne's lead role as James Tyrone Jr. in Eugene O'Neill's revival of The Moon for the Misbegotten.
He is as passionate in his personal life as his professional and has many hobbies that include writing. Byrne's published, best selling, autobiographical sketch Pictures in My Head can be found on bookshelves throughout the world.
Byrne's most recent movie credits include the Joel Silver produced Ghost Ship and the thriller Spider where he played opposite Ralph Fiennes.
