Biography
Born in 1947 as Reginald Kenneth Dwight in Pinner, Middlesex, which was a suburb of London, Elton John has become a nationwide pop icon and was even knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1998.
When he was a child, Elton's mother, Sheila Harris spent a lot of time with the young Elton since his father, Stanley Dwight, was an officer in the Royal Air Force, and had to be gone a lot. Elton and his mother would listen to albums all day long and by the time he was three Elton started playing the piano.
When he was eleven Elton started attending the Royal Academy of music, and he was already a big fan of rock and roll music. When he was at the academy he began to play the music by ear, he could listen to a recording and play it back as precisely as the record. Elton John stayed at the academy for five years. In 1964 when he was sixteen Elton got together with a few friends and formed the band Bluesology, and before long they were opening up for acts like Patti LaBelle and The Isley Brothers.
1967 was the year that Reginald Dwight officially became Elton John. That same year he also began working with lyricist Bernie Taupin. Taupin would write the lyrics while Elton wrote the music for them. The pair continues to work together to this day. In 1968 Elton and Taupin became staff songwriters for DJM Records. They wrote easy listening songs together for two years before they decided to start writing more complex songs that Elton started recording. However, the records did not take off like they had hoped despite the good reviews.
In the spring of 1970 Elton John came out and the first single to be released from that album, "Your Song" made it into the top ten list in the United States. The next seven years went by in a whirlwind of records and performances until John announced that he was going to retire from performing publicly. He continued to release a couple more albums written by lyricists other than Taupin before becoming the first outsider to tour the Soviet Union and Israel. However, in 1979 the pair got back together and released 21 at 33.
In 1984 Elton got married to Renate Blauel. It was a move that surprised many since there was an assumption that he was gay and he had previously announced that he was bisexual in a Rolling Stone interview in 1976. Elton later claimed that he knew he was gay before he got married, but had decided to go through with it anyway. He is currently in a civil partnership with David Furnish. Their ceremony in 2005 saw only their parents in attendance, but they followed it up with a party at their mansion in Berkshire.
