Mexican supermodel, Elsa Benitez, was born in Sonora, Mexico, in 1977. In 1995 when Elsa was eighteen she won an international modeling competition in Costa Rica.

Her fame grew when she was featured on the cover of Vogue Italy three times (April, August, and September) in 1996 and signed with Elite Model Management. Her career flourished as she began to appear on the covers of many different magazines such as Elle, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Marie Claire.

In 1999 Pirelli did a calendar whose theme was "Women Through the Decades," in which Elsa was chosen to represent the 1970s. She has also appeared in advertising campaigns for Victoria's Secret, Dolce & Gabbana, Macy's, Valentino, Rena Lange, Oscar de la Renta, Nine West, and J. Crew. In 2002 she was selected to appear in the Enrique Iglesias video "Love to See You Cry." She has also appeared n the swimsuit edition of Sports Illustrated five times. She hosted the Miss Universe competition in 2004 and appeared in a 2001 television commercial for Taco Bell. She also appeared in CoverGirl's "Beauty Tip of the Week" alongside Jay Manuel, the slot was shown with the 2003 portion of America's Next Top Model.

Reportedly, Elsa was scheduled to board the 1996 TWA Flight 800 that was scheduled to land in Paris. It disintegrated shortly after take-off and killed two hundred and thirty passengers. Elsa had a bad feeling about the flight and decided to change her ticket at the last minute despite reassurances from others. She left on a different flight only ten short minutes after the doomed flight had taken off. The story appeared in the 2004 issue of Sports Illustrated.

In 1999 Elsa married Rony Sikaly, a former NBA star, and the couple have one child, Mila, but they filed for divorce in 2005.
