Biography
Born Elliot Goldstein in 1938 to Jewish immigrants Lucille and Bernie Goldstein, Elliot Gould is an accomplished American actor who has been acting for more than forty years. His work has brought us such memorable characters as the original Trapper John in MASH and Harry Greenberg in Bugsy.
Gould began his career in theater and met his future wife, Barbara Streisand, in the production of I Can Get it for You Wholesale. The two married in 1963 and three years later they had a son, Jason Gould, who would follow in his parents' acting footsteps. In 1971, after eight years of marriage, Streisand and Gould divorced.
Gould then started dating Jennifer Bogart and the pair had two children before getting married in December of 1973. They were divorced in 1976, and then got remarried in 1978. The marriage only lasted one year and the pair separated in 1979.
Gould's first movie appearance came in the 1964 movie, The Confession. However, it was his roles in the sexually driven comedy Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice 1969 and the screwball military comedy MASH in 1970 that launched him into the spotlight. He then went on to star in seven films in 1970 and 1971, but his career seemed to taper off after that initial burst of success. It is speculated that this was because Gold was extremely popular with college radicals, but when radicalism declined, so did his fan base.
He continued working throughout the 1980s and 1990s, but once again came into the public eye through his reoccurring role as Jack Geller in the hit television sitcom, Friends and later as the hotel magnet, Reuben Tishkoff, in the 2001 remake of Ocean's Eleven. Since then he has continued starring in the franchise by reprising his role in Ocean's Twelve in 2004 and Ocean's Eleven in 2007.
