Biography
Billed as a stand-up comedian, actress, and now known as the talk show host for The Ellen Degeneres Show, Ellen DeGeneres was born in 1958. When she originally went to college at the University of New Orleans Ellen majored in communications; however, she dropped out after only one semester to begin a long string of odd jobs before deciding what she wanted to do with her life and career.
Whenever she was around a large group of friends Ellen would do comedy routines, this led to her getting invited to perform her routine at smaller clubs before she landed the role of the emcee at Clyde's Comedy Club. It was while working at this club that Ellen recorded her performances. One year later in 1982 Ellen won a nationwide competition hosted by Showtime to find the funniest person in America. In 1986 she was invited to appear on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and even received the distinction of being invited over to the couch to talk with Johnny on her first visit.
Ellen continued to do several stand-up tours and comedy specials, and she even appeared in two short-lived sitcoms, Open House and Laurie Hill, before landing her own show, Ellen. Critics and fans appeared to enjoy the show for its odd humor, but it gained national attention in 1997 when Ellen and the character on her show simultaneously announced that they were lesbians. The episode, titled "The Puppy Episode" won Ellen an Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series. A year after the legendary episode the show was cancelled due to its steadily falling ratings.
Ellen then appeared in movies like Edtv, The Love Letter, If These Walls Could Talk 2, and Reaching Normal, before once again getting her own television series called, The Ellen Show, but the show was cancelled after just eighteen episodes. In 2003 she began working as the host on her talk show, Ellen: The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which has won multiple Emmys and People's Choice Awards.
Ellen was dating actress, Anne Heche, but Heche left the relationship after several years in order to pursue a relationship with Coley Laffoon. She is now living with actress Portia de Rossi who is known for her work in Arrested Development and Ally McBeal.
