Actress Ellen Barkin was born in New York in 1954. Barkin was a double major at Hunter College in history and drama. After leaving college Barkin decided to continue studying acting at the illustrious Actor's Studio in New York, reportedly studying for seven years before even landing her first audition.
In 1982 Barkin appeared in her third movie, Diner, to which she got good reviews. This led to subsequent roles in movies like the 1987 film The Big Easy, which she co-starred with Dennis Quaid. For her portrayal of Anne Osborne in The Big Easy she won a Sant Jodi award from Spain for Best Foreign Actress.
Barkin was also working in off-Broadway plays in New York. For her role in the production Eden Court, Barkin received favorable reviews. However, the role for which she would receive the most accolades was the made for television movie, Before Women Had Wings, ten years later in 1997 where she played the role of Gloria Marie Jackson.
Barkin won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie, a Golden Satellite Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television, and even a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for TV.
In 1988 Barkin married fellow actor Gabriel Byrne. The couple had two children, Jack and Romey Marion, before divorcing in 1993. Barkin was later remarried to the owner of Revlon, Ron Perelman, in 2000. However, the couple later divorced in 2006.
Barkin is also known for her characters in oddball movies like Drop Dead Gorgeous, Someone Like You, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Currently Barkin has just finished up the newest installment in the "Ocean's Eleven" movies, Ocean's Thirteen, due out in the summer of 2007.
