Biography
There is not much that one can say about the stunning life of Elizabeth Taylor that has not already been said during the span of her career. She was born in 1932 in London, England, to American parents who were living in England at the time, making her both a British and an American citizen at the time of her birth. They remained in England until the British entered World War II at which time they moved to Los Angeles.
Taylor, who had been taking ballet lessons since the tender age of three, appeared in her first film when she was only nine years old. Her original contract was with Universal, but after they decided not to renew her contract she signed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, appearing in their film Lassie Come Home when she was eleven. In 1944 Taylor starred in National Velvet, which quickly became a huge hit, grossing over four million dollars. This success earned her a long-term contract and made her a household name.
When she was eighteen Taylor married her first husband, Conrad Hilton. She would go on to get married seven other times, twice to Richard Burton in 1964 and 1975, and had four children with three different husbands (Richard Burton, Michael Todd, and Michael Wilding). This long list of failed romances would make her the talk of public speculation and gossip until this day. This note on her personal life sometimes shadows the accolades of her professional life as she has won two Oscars for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Butterfield 8, she has also been nominated for three other Academy Awards. She has also assembled another thirty-five awards from a variety of organizations like the National Board of Review, the Golden Globe Awards, the Laurel Awards, and even the Razzies.
The film that she is most well recognized for was the lavish production of Cleopatra in 1963 for which she was paid one million dollars, the most paid to any actress ever at that time. The film did not do as well as expected and many critics were harsh on Taylor's performance of the Egyptian queen. This small setback did not adversely affect Taylor's career as it was after this that she went on to win her Oscar for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?in 1966.
Even though her career began to flag after the 1970's, Elizabeth Taylor remains one of the biggest actresses of Hollywood's golden era and will always be known for her violet eyes and her memorable performances.
