Biography
Greek singer Elena Paparizou was born in Sweden in 1982 and is sometimes known as Helena Paparizou because of the differences in alphabets between Sweden and Greece. Her official website is helenapaparizou.com and she has admitted in an interview that her record company wants her to use Helena, even though her name is correctly spelled Elena.
Early on it became evident to everyone that even though Elena was not raised in show business that she had enormous skills where her singing and dancing were concerned. Before long she was taking a variety of extra classes to help build upon this natural talent. At seventeen, Elena joined up with friend Mikos Panagiotidis to form the band, Antique. Swedish record label, Bonnier quickly picked up the band and they released their first hit single, Opa. Opa reached number one on the charts and gained gold status shortly after its release in 1999. Following this hit Antique was selected to represent Greek at the Eurovision Song Contest where they won third place overall. Four years later Elena won the contest as a solo artist after Antique had split on good terms in 2003.
Elena's first solo album, Protereotita, reached Double Platinum status in Greece. In the fall of 2005, after touring in Australia and North America and being named the official ambassador of the Greek Ministry of Tourism, Elena recorded a new CD single, Mambo!. That single reached the charts and stayed there for ten weeks, eventually reaching platinum status. After that she released her second album, Yparhi Logos, in 2006 where it quickly reached number one and turned platinum in Greece.
Following her success, Elena signed a contract to be the new face of Nokia Greece in 2007, and she was also given the European Border Breaker Award. These awards are given out to ten artists each year who have had success with their first international award.
With her ability to charm and wow audiences as well as continuously hit the charts with her records, it is a sure bet to say that Elena will be singing her way into the history books as she continues to release more albums.
