Biography
The current Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, was born in 1945. Ehud has been officially serving his term as the 12th Prime Minister since April of 2006, even though the official powers had been transferred to him in January of that year after Ariel Sharon was unable to perform his duties after suffering from a hemorrhagic stroke.
Olmert served in the Israel Defense Forces, but while he was serving he became injured. Because of his injury he had to finish his tour of duty as a journalist for BaMahane, a magazine overseen by the Israel Defense Forces. It was while he was working in this capacity during the Yom Kippur War that he was a military correspondent assigned to the headquarters of Ariel Sharon.
Olmert's first appearance in politics was when he was elected to the Israel branch of the legislature, or the Knesset, at only twenty-eight years old in 1973. However, he must have made a good impression because he was then re-elected to seven consecutive terms. Then, for ten years, from 1993 to 2003, Olmert served as the Mayor of Jerusalem. While he served in this office he worked hard to develop several major projects in the city. These included leading the work on the light rail system and other options of transportation in the city.
In 2003 he returned to the Knesset where he was promptly appointed to the position of Vice Prime Minister. In 2005 he was also given the position of Finance Minister because Netanyahu had resigned out of protest of returning the land of the Gaza Strip. Olmert had originally thought that pulling out of the Gaza Strip was a bad idea, but in recent years he has changed his mind and supports the Camp David Peace Accords. In Sharon's second term, he and Olmert became fast allies, and Olmert was an ardent supporter of the unilateral disengagement plan in 2005.
Even though Olmert's term in office began in the tragic death of Ariel Sharon, he promises to lead Israel into an even more prosperous state as one of is most important goals of his time in office is to achieve a permanent peace with the Palestinians.
