Biography
Edward Norton is a well-known and respected actor and director in Hollywood with two Academy Award nominations and a Golden Globe win. Norton did not always start out with his eyes on Hollywood stardom, but was first attracted to the career when he became involved in theater while majoring in History at Yale University. Even after he graduated, Norton did not immediately flock to acting, but rather worked in Osaka, Japan as a consultant for his grandfather, developer James Rouse.

When Norton did decide to embrace his love of theater, he first moved to New York City to begin by working in Off-Broadway theater productions. When he later moved into film the projects his ability to portray dark characters promptly launched his career. The first movie to do this for him was his role as a disturbed man with multiple personalities who had been accused of murder in Primal Fear opposite Richard Gere. For his portrayal in this movie he won the Golden Globe and was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Supporting Actor category.

Edward Norton is also known for his reluctance to accept his celebrity status, choosing instead to donate time and money to causes such as improving the quality of life in impoverished communities. This denial of fame was once again put into the spotlight in 2006 when the Academy Awards stopped issuing gift baskets because of the IRS auditing actors and actresses who did not claim the large sums, each basket ranged from a value of $35,000 to $100,000. Norton claimed that the baskets were an obscene waste of money, and suggested that the money should instead be directly donated to a charity of the actor's choice.

In 2000, Norton made his directorial debut in Keeping the Faith, a romantic comedy about two best friends, a priest and a rabbi, that fall in love with the same girl. The movie also starred Jenna Elfman and Ben Stiller and was dedicated to Norton's mother, Robin, who died of a brain tumor in 1997.

Edward Norton has proven himself as an actor that can carry the weight of almost any character, transforming them from a two-dimensional written character into a believable character merely by adding his presence.
