Biography
Edward Burns is an actor, producer, writer, and director of Irish-American descent born and raised in New York with his brother and sister. Burns received a degree in English from Hunter College. It was while at Hunter College that Burns began studying filmmaking and writing the first of his many short film endeavors. Later, Burns got his start in the entertainment industry while working as a low-level employee for Entertainment Tonight.
It was while he was working on the show that Burns was able to finance and direct his first film, The Brothers McMullen. Because of his connections at ET, Burns was able to slip a copy of the movie to Robert Redford during an interview. The movie had originally been rejected by a number of distributors, but thanks to the efforts of Redford, The Brothers McMullen was seen at Sundance in 1995, receiving the fesitval's Grand Jury Prize. Because of this it became one of the most successful independent efforts of the year before it was then sold to 20th Century Fox's Searchlight Pictures.
After the success of The Brother McMullen, Burns was able to write, star in, and direct his next picture, She's the One. The movie also starred up and coming stars Jennifer Anniston and Cameron Diaz and was released successfully in the summer of 1996. Burns has also acted in the movies Sidewalks of New York, Saving Private Ryan, CONfidence, and Life or Something Like It.
In 2003 Burns married supermodel Christy Turlington. They have two children together, Grace, born in late 2003, and Finn, born in early 2006. During this time Burns wrote, directed, and starred in the movie Looking for Kitty in 2004. The independent movie was filmed for only $200,000 with a handheld digital camera. These types of movies are especially important to Burns as he is committed to being able to write and direct his own films. He seems unconcerned with earning a Hollywood blockbuster, but chooses rather to tackle tough subjects about relationships and real-life problems. It is through this method of straight-talking his audience instead of dancing around them that Burns has made his mark as a talented writer and director.
