Biography
Ed Harris is an accomplished actor, producer, and director who has appeared in a string of movies starting in 1978. He has been nominated for four Academy Awards in the Supporting and Leading Actor categories, although he has yet to win.

Harris was born Edward Allen Harris on November 28, 1950, in Tenafly, New Jersey. He attended Columbia University and the University of Oklahoma, where he majored in acting. During that time, he appeared in several roles in local theater productions. Harris then moved to Los Angeles and began taking classes at the California Institute of the Arts.

Harris' film career began with a small role in the 1978 movie "Coma," and his first major role came two years later in "Borderline." His career continued to grow, and in 1983, he became well-known for playing John Glenn in "The Right Stuff." He would later receive his first Oscar nomination for another space film, "Apollo 13," in 1996, with three more Oscar nominations for his roles in "The Truman Show," "Pollock," and "The Hours."

In recent years, Harris has appeared in "A Beautiful Mind," "A History of Violence," "Radio," "The Human Stain," and "Copying Beethoven." He also had a role in "Gone, Baby, Gone," the film that served as fellow actor Ben Affleck's directorial debut. In 2006, Harris received the Peter J. Owens Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival. The award honors an actor who exhibits brilliance, independence, and integrity in the industry.

In addition to acting, Harris has worked behind the camera. He directed "Pollock" as well as appearing in the film. He has also appeared in some television adaptations and in stage acting, including appearing in Neil LaBute's one man play "Wrecks."

When not acting, Harris lives with this wife, actress Amy Madigan, and their daughter Lily. The couple was married in 1983.
