Biography
Dwayne Johnson, better known as the Rock, is a professional wrestler and actor. He is a third-generation wrestler (both his father and grandfather wrestled) and is cousins with several other professional wrestlers, including Yokuzuna, Rikishi, and Umaga. While he made a huge name for himself in the WWE, he has now retired from wrestling, preferring to work in the film industry.
Johnson was born on May 2, 1972, in Hayward, California. He started playing football while in high school and received a football scholarship to the University of Miami, where he graduated with a double major in criminology and physiology. His athleticism did not go unnoticed, and he joined the NFL after being drafted by the Denver Broncos. However, he was cut from the team three months later.
After his NFL attempt, Johnson decided to follow in his father's footsteps and wrestle. While his father was initially against this, he relented and trained Johnson himself. After a tryout for WWE (then known as the WWF), Johnson secured a short contract with the group. At first, Johnson was booed because he was seen as a two dimensional good guy. When he turned into a "heel," however, he became incredibly popular.
Johnson, as The Rock, climbed the WWE ladder, becoming one of the most well-known wrestlers and winning the championship seven times. However, once he began working in films, Johnson decided to retire from the WWE, and when he contract was up in 2004, he opted not to resign. However, he does hold dual ownership of The Rock name and character with the company.
Between 1998 and 2002, Johnson was riding a huge wave of popularity and used that to transfer over to more mainstream appearances. He appeared in a Wyclef Jean music video and on Saturday Night Live. Next, he was offered guest star roles on "Star Trek: Voyager" and "That 70's Show," and after showing that he could act, he was invited to appear as the Scorpion King, a small role in the hit movie "The Mummy Returns." This success led to his first starring role in the movie's sequel, "The Scorpion King." Since then, Johnson has appeared in numerous movies, including "the Rundown," "Walking Tall," "Be Cool," and "Doom: The Movie."
Off-screen, Johnson is married to Dany Garcia, whom he met while at the University of Miami. The two have one daughter and currently live in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In addition to his acting, Johnson and his wife are big supporters of their alma mater and often appear at University of Miami alumni functions.
