Biography
Actor and comedian Drew Carey is well-known for his hilarious shows, his crew cut hair, and his black-rimmed glasses. He first gained popularity as a stand-up comedian, but he would become known around the world with his sitcom "The Drew Carey Show" and as the host of the US version of "Whose Line Is It Anyway?"
Carey was born on May 23, 1958, in Cleveland Ohio, the setting of "The Drew Carey Show." He attended Kent State University, where we was expelled twice for poor grades, and joined a fraternity. After his failed academic attempt, Carey joined the US Marine Corps Reserve in 1980, where he would serve for six years. He also worked as a bank teller and as a server at Denny's to make ends meet.
In 1985, Carey began his stand-up comedy routine. He won an open-mic comedy contest in 1986, and this win netted him the emcee position at a comedy club. He continued playing clubs for several years, appeared on Star Search in 1988, and later, in 1991, made an appearance on The Tonight Show. Johnny Carson was impressed and invited Carey to remain on stage for the rest of the show. This rare invitation resulted in Carey receiving dozens of calls the next day.
Carey began appearing in supporting roles on numerous television shows and even co-starred in "The Good Life," a short-lived sitcom. He was also a writer on "The Gaby Hoffman Show" for a few years. A few years later, he and fellow writer Bruce Helford developed "The Drew Carey Show," which premiered in 1995. The show ran for nine seasons.
In 1998, while still working on "The Drew Carey Show," Carey was tapped to host the US version of the improve comedy show "Whos Line is it Anyway?" He served as director of the skits and games, appearing in 215 episodes of the series. During this time, he also created the Improv All-Stars group, who made appearances on the show.
In addition to his television work, Carey has appeared in films, as a character in the Sims computer game, has written his autobiography, and occasionally works as a press photographer for the US National Team soccer games.
Carey has won numerous honors, especially in the humor genre. He was named the People's Choice for Favorite Male Television Performer in both 2000 and 2001, received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2003, and has given an honorary Ph. D. from Cleveland State University.
