Biography
Drew Barrymore is one of the most popular American actresses today, and she is also a film producer and owner of Flower Films. Barrymore began her career as a child actress, has dealt with various drug and alcohol problems, and has posed naked for Playboy in addition to making a number of films in multiple genres.
Barrymore was born on February 22, 1975, in Culver City California. Both of her parents were actors, as is her half brother John Blyth Barrymore and many of her ancestors. Her first job came at the age of eleven months when she appeared in a dog food commercial. She got her first real role at age five in "Altered States," and a year later, she hit it big with her role in "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial." In 1984, at the age of nine, she was nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe for "Irreconcilable Differences."
However, all of this fame resulted in a very troubled childhood. Barrymore drank, smoked cigarettes, and was using marijuana and cocaine by the time she was twelve. The media had a field day with her downward spiral. As she became an adult, however, Barrymore turned her life around. In 1992, she used her bad girl image to star in "Poison Ivy." She would continue to use this new image to her advantage, even appearing nude in Playboy in 1995, which led to Steven Spielberg sending her a mocking twentieth birthday gift of a blanket telling her to cover herself up.
Since 1995, Barrymore has starred in a string of blockbusters, including "The Wedding Singer," "Home Fries," "Riding in Cars With Boys," "Charlie's Angels," and more. She has also produced a number of films, including "Charlie's Angels," and been featured as an animated character (whom she also voiced) on the show "Family Guy."
Barrymore received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2004. She has won over 20 different awards and has been nominated for nearly 40, including two Golden Globe nominations.
In her personal life, Barrymore has been married twice, both of which ended in divorce, and has stated that she considers herself bisexual. She also has six tattoos and is the godmother to Frances Bean Cobain, the daughter of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love.
