Dr. Alban (Alban Nwapa) is a musician, producer, and owner of the recording label Dr. Records. His style is a combination of European dance and hip-hop and, as of 2007, has released eight albums and fifteen singles.
Alban was born in Enugu, Nigeria, on August 26, 1957. He would later move to Stockholm, Sweden, to study odontology, the study of teeth that often leads to a career in the forensic sciences (it is used to identify a person by his or her teeth pattern, which is unique). To pay for college, Alban starting making and selling his own music while working as a DJ at the popular Alphabet Street club. He was discovered by DJ Rene, but despite his fame as a DJ and producer, Alban completed his odontology degree and opened his own dentistry.
He worked as a dentist until 1990, when SweMix label owner Denniz PoP and rap star Leila K convinced him to put together an album. "Hello Africa" was released as a tribute to Alban's homeland, and it sold a million copies world-wide, breaking records in Sweden and beyond. Rather than using his real name, Alban used the name many of his dental patients called him: Dr. Alban.
Alban's second album was even bigger, and its single, "It's My Life" hit number one in the Netherlands, Germany, and Israel and number two in the UK. This album solidified Alban's popularity, and his following albums would land on the top ten list around the world. All in all, he has sold over 5 million albums and has 30 Platinum awards.
While many of his early albums were released by SweMix, Alban also has his own record company, Dr. Records. He has produced a number of albums by other artists and some of his own work, including his 1996 album "Born in Africa."
In addition to his own musical success, Alban is related to two other musicians: his cousin Charles Oputa is a famous musician in Nigeria, and his nephew Ricarda Waltken enjoys fame as part of the German group Tic Tac Toe.
