Biography
Dougie Poynter is the bass player and a backup vocalist for the pop band McFly. Poynter has been a member of the band since he was fifteen, joining several years before McFly gained popularity after they toured with former British band Busted in March of 2004.
Poynter was born on November 30, 1987, in Corringham Essex. His mother christened him Dougie, not Douglas, although many commonly believe Dougie is simply a nickname. He has one younger sister and a menagerie of animals. In fact, Poynter was known for breeding lizards as a child.
Poynter joined a punk band during high school. He later (and somewhat abruptly) left to join McFly when he was fifteen. He joined Danny Jones, Tom Fletcher, and Harry Judd in London as their bass guitarist and occasional singer. Poynter has also written two songs and will provide lead vocals for one of them, the group's 2007 single "Transylvania."
Poynter is the shyest member of McFly, rarely speaking in interviews. His other band mates often tease him about this, saying that he usually speaks without thinking, so it's much better that he stays silent. Poynter did break out of his shell for one of the band's videos in which he appeared to be dong a strip show.
Despite his shyness, Poynter is something of a fan favorite. In 2005, he won the "Top Mop" award at the T4 Smash Hits Poll Winners Party for his hair, and in 2006, he received the Virgin Award for "Most Fanciable Male." McFly won the "Best Group" award that same year, solidifying both Poynter's and the group's popularity.
Poynter can be identified by his four tattoos: a star on each ankle, the word "Athletes" across the top of one foot, and his large science fiction tattoo across his chest and right arm, which includes an alien and a space ship.
