Biography
Donny Osmond is one of the most varied entertainers, having careers in singing, acting, hosting talk and game shows, producing, writing, and even race car driving. He is perhaps best known, though, for being half of the singing duo Donny & Maria along with his sister Marie Osmond.
Osmond was born in Ogden, Utah, and is one of nine children. Like most of his siblings, he began performing at a young age and was a teen idol during the early 70's. His solo career boomed with the release of his song "Puppy Love," and he also enjoyed success as a part of The Osmonds, a band made up of Donny and his brothers Alan, Jay, Merrill, and Wayne.
In the mid 70's, Donny and his sister Marie formed Donny & Marie. The two recorded several albums and even hosted a variety show together in both the 70's. After the show ended, Osmond returned to a solo career for several years and performed on Broadway. He most noted musical theater success was as Joseph in "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," appearing in over 2,000 performances. He has also played Gaston in the Broadway version of Disney's "Beauty and the Beast."
Other musical endeavors include singing the song "I'll Make A Man Out Of You" for Disney's "Mulan" and dancing in the music video of Weird Al Yankovic's song "White and Nerdy."
In 1998, he and Marie reunited to host a talk show for two years. He then hosted the game show "Pyramid" for two years and, as of 2007, has plans to host both the UK version of "Pyramid" and a CBS remake of "Name That Tune." Osmond also voiced the animated version of himself in animated series "Johnny Bravo" and made a guest appearance on the soap opera "All My Children." He and Marie also appeared in an amusing Pepsi Twist commercial where they were compared with hardcore rocker Ozzy Osbourne and his family.
Osmond married his wife Debra on May 8, 1978, and the couple has five children. The family is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and Osmond has been the target of some criticism over the fact that he did not participate in any missionary work, something the church greatly encourages, due to his career.
