Biography
Donna Reed was one of the most beloved actresses and mother. She won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as a prostitute in "From Here to Eternity" in 1953 and starred in several television series. Reed was also politically involved. She co-founded Another Mother for Peace, an anti-Vietnam War group, and she fought hard for gender equality.
Reed was born as Donnabelle Mullenger to father William and mother Hazel in Denison, Iowa, on January 27, 1921. She grew up on the family farm in Iowa, and later got her first role in the film "The Get-Away" in 1941. After that, she appeared in many movies and series, although she is probably most well-known for her role in "From Here to Eternity," "It's a Wonderful Life," and "The Picture of Dorian Grey."
She also had her own television series, "The Donna Reed Show," on which she played wholesome housewife Donna Stone. The show ran from 1958 to 1966 and was a situation comedy that mainly focused on parenting problems and the lives of the children on the show. One of the most unique aspects of the show was that Reed's character worked as a nurse. Most television wives during this time period did not have a job.
Another of Reed's most well-known television roles was when she temporarily replaced Barbara Bel Geddes on Dallas. Bel Geddes was ill during the 1984-85 season, and Reed stepped into the role of "Miss Ellie" during that time. However, when Bel Geddes recovered, Reed was fired. She sued for breach of contract and was awarded a seven-figure settlement.
On January 14, 1986, Reed passed away at the age of 64 from pancreatic cancer. She left behind four children. After her death, the Donna Reed Foundation for the Performing Arts was organized to award scholarships to outstanding performing arts students. The foundation also hosts an annual performing arts festival.
