Biography
Dominic Bernard Patrick Luke Monaghan is best known for two roles: playing the hobbit Merry Brandybuck in the hit film adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings trilogy and for playing Charlie Pace on the television show Lost. Before his rise to stardom via The Lord of the Rings, Monaghan had appeared in only one movie (This is Personal: the Hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper) and three television series-Hetty Wainthropp Investigates (his first role in 1996), Hostile Waters, and Monsignor Renard.

Born in Berlin, Germany, on December 8, 1976, to English parents, Monaghan grew up speaking both English and German. At twelve, his parents moved to Stockport England, where Monaghan would attend St. Anne's RC High School and Aquinas College. It was while he was at college studying English literature, drama, and geography that he got his first major role in television. He was cast in the BBC television series Hetty Wainthropp Investigates as Hetty's assistant, Geoffrey Shawcross.

Five years later, Monaghan got the breakout role of a lifetime as Merry in The Lord of the Rings. During the filming, Monaghan, like many of the other actors in the cast, got a tattoo of the word for "nine" in Tolkien's fictional Elvish language on his right arm. The tattoo references the fact that there are nine main characters in the film, one of which is Monaghan's character. After the trilogy, Monaghan narrated the documentary Ringers: Lord of the Fans, which discussed the Tolkien fandom.

Monaghan is very active in the environment, including working to plant trees and preserve trees and forests across the world. As part of his activism, he bought a small forest in India to save it from being destroyed. He has also appeared in a PETA ad urging people to support ethical treatment of wild animals.

As far as his personal life goes, tabloid photographs and articles have linked him to fellow Lost co-star Evangeline Lilly, but as of 2007, neither have confirmed or denied their relationship, choosing to keep any relationship they might have private rather than public.
