Biography
Dominic Howard is the drummer for Muse, a British band that plays alternative and progressive rock music, although they also blend in classical music, heavy metal, and electronica. Howard's musical influences include Tre Cool, Stewart Copeland, John Bonham, and Dave Grohl, who is perhaps the most significant. Howard has a very wide taste in music, enjoying Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Queen, The Smashing Pumpkins, Green Day, and others.
Howard was born on December 7, 1977, in Stockport, a small town near Manchester. He first started playing drums when he was eleven, and he says he was inspired by a jazz band that performed at his school. He continued his interest during his teen and college years.
Howard attended Teignmouth Community College, and it was during his college years that he first joined a band. However, his band didn't really take off until Matt Bellamy joined. When the second guitarist left, they invited Chris Wolstenholme to join them, and after changing names several times, the three would finally becoming Muse. They played gigs until, in 1994, they won a battle of the bands concert and all three decided to play professionally instead of attending university.
While the band has become successful, Howard did face personal tragedy during a 2004 tour. During the group's performance at Glastonbury, Dominic's father Bill suffered a heart attack and passed away. Howard nearly left Muse at that point, but with his band mates' support, the band and the tour continued.
Muse began building popularity, releasing a self-titled album under the British label Dangerous in 1998 and touring Europe and Australia in 1999 and 2000. Their following albums would gain even more popularity, with one, Origin of Symmetry, placing 74th on Q Magazine's poll of the top 100 greatest albums ever. In 2006, they won both the Best Alternative and Best Live Act at the MTV European Music Video Awards.
Howard has an exclusive contract with drum company Tama, and he has recently started using their transparent drum kits. He also has a habit of destroying drum kits during performances. His snare drums are also made by Tama, and he plays cymbals made by Zildjian. Howard also plays using the Zildjian Dennis Chambers signature series drumsticks.
