He was no slouch in academia, graduating from the Royal Institute of Technology and earning a master's degree in chemical engineering in 1982 from the University of Sydney. Lundgren even went on to receive the Fulbright Scholarship to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but he dropped out after a few weeks to pursue a career in acting. During his education, Lundgren has learned five languages, speaking Swedish, German, and English fluently while speaking Japanese and French less so.

His first role came in 1985 when Lundgren was cast in the James Bond movie A View to a Kill. This was followed by Rocky IV, in which Lundgren won the role of Sylvester Stallone's opponent Ivan Drago. Over 5000 actors auditioned for the role. Lundgren would then go on to get his first leading role in Masters of the Universe as He-Man. Despite being based on the popular cartoon and toy line, the movie wasn't a success.

He followed this role up with appearances in movies like Universal Solider, Silent Trigger, and Johnny Mnemonic. Since then, he has appeared in mostly low-budget action films or foreign movies.
