David John Matthews was born on January 9, 1967 in South Africa. He is the lead vocalist and guitarist of the Grammy Award Winning Dave Matthews Band. They got the award for the best rock performance by a duo or a group and they also got the award for best male rock performance. The Dave Matthews band is composed of Boyd Tinsley, LeRoi Moore, Carter Beauford, Stefan Lessard, and Peter Griesar. Their first gig was at the Pink Warehouse in Charlottesville on May 11, 1991. Dave Matthews initially intended someone else to sing his songs but ended up singing them himself. Sometimes Dave Matthews goes on sideline acting jobs working with Tim Reynolds. Dave Matthews is married to Jennifer Ashley Harper and they have two daughters that are twins. They were born in 2001. Their names are Stella Busina and Grace Anne. They are expecting a third child. The Matthews family goes around Seatlle, Washington, and Charlottesville. Dave Matthews is a naturalized American citizen. He identifies with the American culture very well, not only in music and in culture but also in politics and governance. Although a naturalized American citizen, Dave still goes back to South Africa once in a while. He goes to South Africa once a year. In some years, he even goes twice. He says he does this to "lose himself and get awareness of himself" once in a while. While Dave was growing up in South Africa, he lived with his two sisters and his brother Peter. They moved to America when their father got a job as a physicist in IBM. His sister died in 1994 and the Grammy nominated album Under the Table and Dreaming was dedicated to her. Aside from living in South Africa and America, Dave Matthews also lived in Amsterdam for quite awhile.
