Biography
David Brubeck was born on December 6, 1920 in California. He is known as a Jazz pianist. He is regarded in his field as a genius. He simply does not follow orders and he always makes it a point to create a path of his own. His music ranges from the bombastic type to the refined type, reflecting the influence of his mother's classical training and his own ways of improvising music. His music has all sorts of strange time signatures. In Dave Brubeck Quartet's best piece, "Take Five," it was written in 5/4 time signature. "Pick up Sticks" was recorded on a 6/4 time signature. "Unsquare Dance" was recorded in 7/8 time signature. "Blue Rondo a la Turk" was recorded in 9/8 time signature. Brubeck's solid training came from his mother who studied piano in England. Brubeck was never interested in reading sheet music and always wanted to create his own melodies. Due to this, David was nearly expelled from his school when one of his professors found out that he was unable to read sheet music. He was still able to graduate from the University of the Pacific in 1942. At some point in time, David went into the army and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he went back to school at Mills College where he studied fugue and orchestration. He signed up with California's Fantasy Records later on. He organized the Dave Brubeck Quartet where they took a long residency at the Black Hawk Night Club in San Francisco. This was the time where Dave got most of the spotlight. In 1954, Dave Brubeck was featured on the cover of Time Magazine. One of their platinum hits came in 1959 when Dave Brubeck released "Time Out," an album which had songs that were entirely not written in common time signatures. Time Out was followed by Time Further Out, Time in Outer Space, and Time Changes.
