Biography
An award winning actor, director, producer,student activist, social activist, active community leader and a philanthropist.
Daniel Lebern Glover was born in San Francisco, California on July 22, 1946. Married to Asake Bomani, in 1975, was blessed with one child, Mandisa. He met his wife at the San Francisco State University, where he was enrolled. He was trained at the Black Actors Workshop of the American Conservatory Theater in his late twenties. He shifted his career from a city administrator to a stage actor, which swiftly brought him to Los Angeles.
In his teen-age life, he suffered epilepsy. Out of this health problem, he developed concentration technique as a type of self-hypnosis to avoid seizures which he had not experienced till the age of 35.
The acquired technique in concentration made him appear in the numerous stage production like the Island and Macbeth at the Los Angeles Actors' Theater and Sizwe anzi is Dead at the Eureka Theatre. His first national recognition as an actor was his performance in the New York`s production of Athol Fugard`s Master Harold and the Boys.
As a superstar in his own right, he charmed his stage, television and film viewers over a decade. His worked as an actor was proven further in the revival of Master Harold and the Boys. Then followed by a lot of film credits like Places in the Heart, the Lethal Weapon series to the award winning movie, To Sleep with Anger, that he was also an executive producer and a lot more blockbuster movies.
His film directing job for 2007 will be the action epic Toussaint, which is about the Haitian Revolution and its leader Toussaint Louverture aside from his latest film project the Dream girls directed by Bill Condon.
On the face of his excellent film and TV performances, he garnered awards that includes a lot of NAACP Image Awards, an ACE Award and an Emmy nominations. Aside from being a good actor, he was also an advocate of good education particularly to the youth.
He was a student activist while attending at the San Francisco State University under the Black Students Union. From a student activist to a social activist, he is now a supporter of the activist group A.N.S.W.E.R.
His active community involvement and philanthropic activities became his passion in life. Such passion was shown in his serious participation in the Vanguard Public Foundation based in San Francisco. He was the board chairman of the Trans Africa Forum in 2001, an African-American lobbying organization in Africa and the Caribbean. He was an active member on the board of the Algebra Project, a math
empowerment program developed by civil rights veteran Bob Moses. Since 1998, he was the Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Program, that concerns on the issues of poverty, disease and economic underdevelopment in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. As a dedicated public servant, he was honored the 2003 NAACP Chairman`s Award.
