The 44th Vice President of United States of America James Danforth Quayle (1989-1993) was born on February 4, 1947 in Indianapolis, Indiana. His parents name was James C. Quayle and Pulliam Quayle. Dan Quayle's mother Pulliam belonged to a wealthy family. Her father Eugene C. Pulliam was influential publishing giant who runned Central Newspapers, Inc and owner of many reputed newspapers like The Indianapolis Star and the Arizona Republic. James C. Quayle moved to Arizona to run the family's newspaper business along with family in 1955.
Dan Quayle completed his schooling in Arizona and completed his high school studies in Huntington High School in Huntington, Indiana. Dan received B.A. degree in political science from the DePauw University in 1969.He joined the Indiana National Guard (1969-1975) and earned a Juris Doctor degree (from Indiana University School of Law Indianapolis) while serving in the National Guard. After receiving the law degree he worked with his family newspaper the Huntington Herald-Press as associate publisher and also continued his law practice in Huntington along with his wife.
Dan Quayle started his political career as he was elected as U.S. Congress from Indiana's Fourth Congressional District. He also created history when he was reelected in 1978 with highest percentage margin in the northeast Indiana district. Dan was the youngest person to be elected for U. S. Senate from the state of Indiana at the age of 33 in 1980. He was again reelected for the same post in 1986 that to with the highest margin ever achieved in Indiana. He worked in various areas of legislative work such as human resources, areas of defense, arms control and labor.
In the 1988 Republic National Convention held in New Orleans, Louisiana, George Herbert Walker Bush made Dan Quayle his running mate in the general elections. Together they made a great victory. But he was criticized by many people in USA as well as in other countries .He was the first chairman of the National Space Council and in 1989 he was named head of Council on Competitiveness by the President. Some of his statements or speeches were garbled or confusing. He even made blunders which become talk of the town. In 1992 he had been challenged and he survived it and secured re-nomination. Due to health problems he pulled out of 1996 Republican presidential nomination. And in Republican nomination for 2000 contest he ranked eighth so he withdrew from the race.
Now he resides in Arizona. Dan is the president of Quayle and Associates, chairman of Cerberus Capital Management which is a hedge fund and an Honorary Trustee Emeritus of the Hudson Institute. He has have written some best selling books like Standing Firm, The American Family and Worth Fighting For. He also writes for newspaper columns.
And Dan Quayle is the only vice-president (who has not become president) who has a museum which is situated in Huntington, Indiana, named The Dan Quayle Center and Museum.
