Biography
Family and Early Life

His Holiness the Dalai Lama was born on 6 July 1935, in a poor family in a small village of Taktser in the province of Amdo. He was names Lhamo Thondup, which means 'Wish-Fulfilling Goddess'. His family had to toil hard to earn a precarious living from the land there is infertile.

His Holiness' belonged to a family of farmers who grew barley, buckwheat and potatoes. His father bore a quick temper while his mother was the kindest lady ever known to him. He had 16 siblings, of whom only seven lived. At the time of his birth, his eldest sister acted as a mid wife, who was eighteen years older to him.

An interesting incident that has been quoted by His Holiness-"At the time of my birth she helped my mother run the house and acted as my midwife. When she delivered me, she noticed that one of my eyes was not properly open. Without hesitation she put her thumb on the reluctant lid and forced it wide fortunately without any ill effect". His parents had no idea that he would be proclaimed Dalai Lama.

Past times

His Holiness recollects his initial reminiscence of his childhood, of observing a group of children fighting and running to join in with the weaker side. He also liked to sit in a hen's nest and make noises. Another favorite occupation of His Highness was to pack things in a bag as if I was about to go on a long journey.

Discovery as Dalai Lama

When His Highness was barely three years old, Senior Lamas from the Tibetan government were sent to find the new incarnation of the previous Dalai Lama. The search was followed by a number of incidences and proofs that confirmed that Lhamo Thondup was the new Dalai Lama.
He received his education in logic, Tibetan art and culture, Sanskrit, medicine and Buddhist philosophy.

Countdown to Escape

His Holiness made a historic visit to China from July 1954 to June 1955 for peace talks regarding the invasion of China on Tibet. He met Mao Zadong and other Chinese leaders, including Chou En-lai, Chu Teh and Deng Xiaoping. After this, he visited India to participate in the 2500th Buddha Jayanti celebrations.

Escape into Exile

On 17 March 1958, His Highness was given a clear order to leave the country. he disguised as a common soldier, slipped past the massive throng of people along with a small escort and proceeded towards Kyichu river to meet his family members before leaving the country.

His Highness strives for resettlement and eventually gain freedom for Tibet.
