Early Life
Dakota Fanning was born in Conyers, Georgia, to Steven and Joy Fanning. Steven Fanning was a former baseball captain with the Conyers baseball team. Dakota is accompanied by her younger sister Elle, who is also a well known actress. Dakota Fanning belongs to half German descent and half Irish origin. Dakota and her family are Baptists, members of the Southern Baptist Convention.
To Dakota Fanning, acting was a passion since the age of five, when she started giving stage shows. She got her first break at the age of seven when she appeared with distinguished musician Ray Charles in a television commercial for the Georgia State Lottery. After this, she was also chosen for a Tide commercial which launched her into the television world. Her first major acting job was a guest-starring role in the NBC prime-time drama, ER, which remains one of her favorite roles in which she played a car accident victim who has leukemia.
Career
Fanning latter did several roles on a number of guest roles in recognized television series, like CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Friends, The Practice, Spin City and Malcolm in the Middle. After the stint with guest roles, she moved on to play title characters of Ally McBeal and The Ellen Show.
In 2001, Fanning was chosen to star opposite Sean Penn in the movie I Am Sam. The movie revolved around a mentally impaired man who fights for the custody of his daughter, the role was played by Fanning. Fanning was only eight years when she did this act and it made her the youngest star ever to be nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award, for her supporting performance. When she won the Best Young Actor/Actress award from the Broadcast Film Critics Association for the film, she was too short to reach the microphone; presenter Orlando Bloom held her up for the duration of her acceptance speech.
Major Hits
In 2002, fanning was cast as the lead child role in Steven Spielberg's science fiction miniseries Taken. By then, she was already known for her powerful performances and was given positive reviews by many film critics including Tom Shales of Washington Post.
