Dag Hjalmar Agne Carl Hammarskjold was born on 29 July 1905 in Jonkoping in south-central Sweden and was the fourth son of Hjalmar Hammarskjold, Prime Minister of Sweden during the years of World War I, and his wife Agnes, M.C. (b. Almquist).

Early life
At the age of 18, Dag Hammarskjold graduated from college and enrolled in Uppsala University. He spent his early years in the city of Uppland and studied French history, social philosophy and political economy. H also received, honors, with his Bachelor of Arts degree two years later. After this he studied economics for three years at the same university and received a "filosofic licenciat" degree in economics at the age of 23. He continued his studies for two more years to become a Bachelor of Laws in 1930.
Career
After his college, Mr. Dag Hammarskjold moved to Stockholm, where he took the seat as a secretary of a governmental committee on unemployment. During 1930-1934, he also devoted his time in writing his doctor's thesis in economics, entitled, "Konjunkturspridningen" (The Spread of the Business Cycle). He was also made the assistant professor in political economy in the University of Stockholm in 1933.
Till 1953, Mr. Dag Hammarskjold served many honorable posts, and in 1953, he was unanimously selected as UN Secretary General which came as a surprise to him. He was selected on March 31 with the majority of 10 out of eleven states. The UN General Assembly elected him in the April 7-10 session, by 57 votes out of 60. In 1957 he was re-elected for the same post.
During his term, he tried to soothe out the relations between Israel and the Arab states. He also played an important role in negotiating the deal for the release of 15 US pilots who had served in the Korean War and been captured by the Chinese. He was the first UN Secretary General to establish the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF).
Dag Hammarskjold was well known for his role as the Secretary-General of the United Nations from 10 April 1953 until 18 September 1961. A bright career was ended when he died in a plane crash while going to attend a peace mission in the Congo.
He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1961, having been nominated before his tragic death.
