Biography
Colin Luther Powell's date of birth is 5th April 1937. His father was Luther Theophilus Powell and mother was Maud Ariel Powell. His parents had migrated from Jamaica and were working the garment district of the New York City. He did his schooling in a public school called 'Morris High School'. He did his graduation in geology from the City College of New York and he attained his MBA from George Washington University.

Career of Colin Powell

Colin Powell joined army after gradating from the City College in the year 1958. He was commissioned as Army Second Lieutenant in that year. Under the then President of USA Richard Nixon he served his White House Fellowship. During his career in the Army he served in Vietnam as well as in most staff and command positions. He became a General on 4th April 1989. He has won several medals and badges for his outstanding performance in the Army.

Colin Powell became Ronald Reagan's National Security Advisor at the age of 49. He was the youngest officer to serve as Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff at the age of 52. His loyalty was most valued during his service, therefore, he supports using force to gain a military objective. This fundament was known as a Powell doctrine.

Colin Powell was hugely popular among the general public in America. He opposed invasion of Iraq prior to the September 11 attacks on America. He was the 65th United States Secretary of State from the period January 20th 2001 to January 23rd 2005. He was later succeeded by Condoleezza Rice.

Powell declared himself a Republican in 1996. During the 1996 elections he was being considered as an opponent to Bill Clinton, however he declined and Al Gore took his place. He was the first African American Secretary of State.
